# Skills and rules

> Understand how global Fimo skills and site rule files guide your coding agent.

Fimo gives coding agents two kinds of guidance. Skills provide version-matched product instructions. Rule files describe how to work in a specific repository.

## Shared site guidance

[Site knowledge](/docs/cli/knowledge.md) stores goals, brand guidance, and rules shared across Branches.
Fimo's skills instruct external agents to read it before site recommendations, planning, design,
copy, and code work, including when they enter a specialist skill directly. Agents refresh it for new
tasks and site changes. Repository rules still describe how to work with the code.

Knowledge is optional. Agents should ask only for task-critical missing information and must not save
inferred guidance automatically. Saving knowledge requires an explicit request and editing permission.

## Global bootstrap skill

`fimo skills install` adds one small global skill to each selected coding tool. The bootstrap tells the agent to fetch the instruction set it needs. The full skills do not get copied into every repository.

> [tab] npm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> npx fimo@latest skills install
> npx fimo@latest skills list
> ```

> [tab] Bun
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> bunx fimo@latest skills install
> bunx fimo@latest skills list
> ```

> [tab] pnpm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> pnpm dlx fimo@latest skills install
> pnpm dlx fimo@latest skills list
> ```

> [tab] Yarn
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> yarn dlx fimo@latest skills install
> yarn dlx fimo@latest skills list
> ```

## Skills loaded on demand

| Skill | Use it for |
| - | - |
| `fimo-code` | Schemas, generated clients, labels, forms, media, and framework integration |
| `fimo-cli` | Site, content, Branch, deploy, domain, and analytics workflows |
| `fimo-studio` | Tasks in Fimo Studio |
| `fimo-migration` | Site migration |

Load a skill or one of its reference documents through the CLI:

> [tab] npm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> npm exec -- fimo skills get fimo-code
> npm exec -- fimo skills get fimo-cli --ref deploy
> ```

> [tab] Bun
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> bunx --no-install fimo skills get fimo-code
> bunx --no-install fimo skills get fimo-cli --ref deploy
> ```

> [tab] pnpm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> pnpm exec fimo skills get fimo-code
> pnpm exec fimo skills get fimo-cli --ref deploy
> ```

> [tab] Yarn
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> yarn fimo skills get fimo-code
> yarn fimo skills get fimo-cli --ref deploy
> ```

`fimo-code` resolves from the package installed in the site. The workflow skills resolve from the CLI you run. If the site dependencies are missing, install them before loading `fimo-code`.

Reference documents cover narrower tasks. `site-checks`, for example, tells an agent how to choose a running local server, an existing preview, or a URL you supplied. The agent uses `agent-browser` when available or equivalent tools in its environment, and reports what that target can prove without treating preview measurements as published-site performance.

```bash theme={null}
fimo skills get fimo-cli --ref site-checks
```

For a visual problem that appears briefly, ask the agent to record the interaction and save a timestamped contact sheet. The images show changes between the initial and final screenshots. Browser inspection can also return only changed page content or screenshots during repeated checks; ask for a fresh full capture when you need a review artifact.

## Site rule files

New sites include `AGENTS.md` and `CLAUDE.md`. `AGENTS.md` is the shared source for site guidance and works directly with tools that support it. Generate missing variants for other tools with:

> [tab] npm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> npm exec -- fimo rules sync
> npm exec -- fimo rules sync --agents=cursor
> ```

> [tab] Bun
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> bunx --no-install fimo rules sync
> bunx --no-install fimo rules sync --agents=cursor
> ```

> [tab] pnpm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> pnpm exec fimo rules sync
> pnpm exec fimo rules sync --agents=cursor
> ```

> [tab] Yarn
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> yarn fimo rules sync
> yarn fimo rules sync --agents=cursor
> ```

`fimo rules sync` only creates missing files. It does not overwrite a variant you have edited. To rebuild one from the current `AGENTS.md`, remove that variant first, then run the command again.

| Agent | Site rule file |
| - | - |
| Claude Code | `CLAUDE.md` |
| Cursor | `.cursor/rules/fimo.mdc` |
| Windsurf | `.windsurfrules` |
| Gemini CLI | `GEMINI.md` |
| Codex, OpenCode, Aider, and other compatible tools | `AGENTS.md` |

## Keep the global skill current

Use `sync` after upgrading from an older CLI when you need to remove stale global Fimo skills:

> [tab] npm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> npx fimo@latest skills sync
> ```

> [tab] Bun
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> bunx fimo@latest skills sync
> ```

> [tab] pnpm
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> pnpm dlx fimo@latest skills sync
> ```

> [tab] Yarn
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> yarn dlx fimo@latest skills sync
> ```

Use `fimo skills uninstall` to remove the global bootstrap from selected coding tools. Site rule files remain in the repository.
