# Labels and text

> Keep interface copy editable and add translated values for each site language.

Labels hold short interface copy such as headings, buttons, navigation items, placeholders, alt text, and SEO strings. Your code declares a stable key. The editable value lives in Fimo.

Use content schemas for articles, products, and other structured content. Use labels for copy that belongs to the interface.

## Add a label

**1. Declare the key**

Ask your coding agent to load the `fimo-code` labels and framework references, then add a literal key such as
`hero.title` with the framework's supported label API.

**2. Find missing values**

`bash fimo validate `

**3. Set the value**

`bash fimo labels set hero.title --value "Build your next site" `

> [!NOTE]
>
> Label keys must be string literals. A key assembled at runtime cannot be tracked or validated.

## Translate labels

Omit `--locale` to let the selected Branch write its configured default language. Pass a locale for another language:

```bash theme={null}
fimo labels set hero.title --locale es --value "Crea tu próximo sitio"
fimo labels set-many --locale fr --file labels.fr.json
```

Add the language to the site before writing its values. See [Locales](/docs/cli/locales.md).

Fimo resolves an omitted locale from the selected Branch, not from the checkout's local config.

Editors can update the same values in **Content → Labels and Text** in Studio.

For list, bulk update, delete, and validation commands, see the [CLI reference](/docs/reference/cli.md).
